  • Ways Drop Down Menus were used in sample items: The Drop Down Menus were not used in released ELA items. This item type was used in math to build and solve equations, choose the correct label for answers, and build charts of equivalent values.
  • In 2013, both PARCC and SBAC released testing blueprints and explanations of new item types. This “drag and drop” technology didn’t seem like it would be so difficult for students to figure out. Click, drag, drop—simple enough, right? Later, both groups released sample items and practice tests and then teachers finally got a glimpse of how different these Common Core tests really were. Teachers began to worry that without repeated exposure to the new item types, students would perform poorly on testing—not because they hadn’t mastered the material, but because they hadn’t mastered the technology.

There have been so many shifts in pedagogical theory and practice over the years that nobody really thought these national learning goals would come to fruition. And then they did.

    • Ways Constructed Responses were used in sample items: In ELA, the Constructed Response functionality was used as a way for students to answer questions that needed to include textual evidence. This item was also used for students to revise and rewrite given passages, add conclusions to stories, and write arguments opposing a given text. Math questions using this item asked students to explain numerical results, explain given solutions, and write down steps for problem solving. When this item was used in Math, no equations or numerical input was required.

        • Ways To Help Prepare Your Students For These New Item Types

          When two national testing organizations—The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) and the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC)—were formed and states joined one or the other, teachers began to think, “Okay, this is happening.” When both PARCC and SBAC announced that their tests would only be taken online and would include new item types, specifically, new technology enhanced item types, district and school administrators wondered how they’d ever get the hardware to support the tests. And teachers wondered how they’d ever get their students prepared.

      4. Equation Builder: This item is like a mini word processor that includes specialized mathematical symbols, ranging from simple division signs to more complex trigonometric symbols, such as sin and cosine.

    • The Mathematics Common Core Toolbox: On this site you can choose your grade span and complete anywhere from 5 to 8 practice items modeled on the PARCC test. Items include most of the new technology enhanced functionality.
    • 3.Text Selection/Highlighting: This item type requires students to click on words, phrases, or entire sentences as a way to answer questions about specific parts of a text.

      But, teachers, you are now in luck. Using the sample items and released PARCC and SBAC tests as models, software developers have begun to incorporate the new technology types into games and apps, perfect for classroom use and test prep. We’ve put together a list of a few new technology enhanced item types you’re likely to see on either the PARCC or SBAC testing this spring, along with some suggestions for ways to get your students prepared to master the Common Core tests.

      Next, you’ll need to seek out educational apps and websites that use similar functionality found in the Common Core tests to familiarize students with the new item types. Here are a few we recommend:

      6.Constructed Response: This item is an embedded word processor. It has simple word processing functionality, like the ability to change text size and style and to cut, copy and paste.

      • Ways Drag and Drop was used in sample items: In ELA, the Drag and Drop functionality included tiles with statements from an accompanying text. Those tiles were then dragged to a designated area on screen to identify multiple details in a text, sequence events in a story or process steps in information texts, complete graphic organizers, identify supporting evidence, arrange a summary, and identify central ideas. In Math, the tiles contained numbers or equations and were dragged to categorize types of questions, arrange answers in numerical order, and match expressions with word forms
      • Ways Multiple Part Questions were used in sample items: In ELA, the Multiple Part Question included a passage for students to read and two to four different types of questions to answer. Each question part was related to the one before it; for example a question in Part A might asked students to identify the theme of the text and then Part B was a Multiple Select question asking students to choose each statement from the text that supported their answer in Part A. In math, a student had to solve an equation using Drop Down menus in Part A and then justify their answer to Part A in a Constructed Response in Part B.
        • 2. Multiple Select: This item type is most similar to a traditional standardized test format. It is a multiple choice question, but instead of just one correct answer, there are many, and students must choose all of them to get the question correct.

        • Ways Text Selection/Highlighting was used in sample items: In ELA, students were prompted to select claims that supported a central idea, or to choose sentences that provided context for a vocabulary word by clicking on the text provided. The selected text would either highlight or turn a different color. This item type was not used for math questions on sample tests or practice items.
        • 7. Multiple Part Question: This item is not a new item type; rather it is a new way of organizing items. The Multiple Part Question asks related, tiered questions using a combination of other enhanced item types.

          Common Core testing season is right around the corner, so you want to spend some time making sure your students have the technological skills that will be required of them. PARCC and SBAC released items and practice tests to demonstrate the new item types students will see in the spring. We’ve summarized these items and given you some excellent online resources to help your students practice with the new testing interface.       15 Schools Using Flipped Classrooms Right Now | Essay Writing

      Discovery Canyon High School

      Flipped classrooms are growing in popularity at East Grand Rapids High School in Michigan. The first teacher to try the method, science teacher Janyce Huff, has found that it gives her a lot more time to spend on lab experiments and interaction with students. Like Roshan at Bullis, Huff found that when trying to cover it all in the allotted class period, there just wasn’t enough time for everything. She’s also found that what takes her 40 minutes to explain in the classroom can be covered in a 10-12 minute vodcast, saving both her and students’ time, though she and other teachers admit that overall the flipped method does require more investment. Another challenge is keeping students accountable, as those who don’t watch the video before class will likely be lost and get little from the experience. Overall, however, the teachers and the students seem to embrace the method.

      While not all teachers love the idea of flipped classrooms, high school teacher Shelley Wright sure does. She doesn’t believe it’s the most amazing thing ever to happen to education, but she does think that the classroom time it frees up can be an amazing opportunity in the hands of the right teacher. She uses flipped education in her classroom, but not all the time. She prefers to use it in “bite-sized chunks” rather than assigning video lectures every night. Often, the video assignments may not even be lectures but short snippets designed to build curiosity and get students thinking. These videos, along with a class wiki, help students organize, interact with, and understand the material — what she believes the educational experience is all about.

      Fans of the flipped classroom largely have this high school to thank for pioneering the practice. Two science teachers, Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams, came up with the idea to record lessons online for students. At first, the lessons were just for students who couldn’t make it to class, but the teachers soon realized that nearly all of their kids were taking advantage of the videos to review and reinforce their classroom lessons. The two then realized that perhaps they had stumbled onto something great, and created the format we now refer to as flipped learning. Both teachers believe that it’s not the videos alone that make the method effective, but the overall approach flipped classrooms take to learning. Bergmann and Sams feel the setup gives them more time to give individual attention to students and build better, stronger relationships, which can often foster greater motivation. Since they first started flipped teaching, the method has spread like wildfire, and is now used in thousands of schools across the nation.

      We’ve heard a lot about flipped learning in primary and secondary schools, but not much about its uses in higher education. While it is a much more popular method in the lower grades, there are college professors who used flipped classrooms with their students. Susan Murphy is one of them, using flipped methods to teach her students about social media at Algonquin College. It would almost seem wrong not to use a flipped classroom in a certification program all about social media, which may be part of the reason Murphy chose to take her lectures online. She maintains a blog about her experiences with flipping her classroom, and after just a few months of using it, she notes some benefits, including a much more relaxed classroom atmosphere. Students who struggle with the material are much less stressed trying to keep up, and all students are able to tailor the learning experience to their own pace. She states, “My students are confident and most importantly they are having fun learning new things. Attendance in class is at an all-time high; in fact many of them are in class and already working when I show up!”

      Brett Wilie, a Dallas-based science teacher, first decided to flip his classroom after seeing the videos produced by flipping legends Aaron Sams and Jon Bergmann. He was inspired by the possibilities they offered and followed their model when developing his own flipped classroom materials, flipping both his regular and honors chemistry courses. Like many other teachers, he says one of the best benefits of the method is simply having more class time. It allows him to cover the required curriculum while still having lots of time for discussion, labs, interaction, and projects. With that extra time he was able to bring in more lessons that helped students see how chemistry could be applied in the real world to solve everyday problems, something he feels greatly motivates and inspires students. The results of his experiment with flipping have been largely positive, and overall student scores increased during his first year of using the method.

      Students at Willis use what is called “blended learning,” but many teachers at the school are also embracing flipped classrooms. Social studies teacher Darren O’Hara began using the method this year and feels that students are retaining more information and getting more excited about learning. Students also enjoy the flipped classroom, with seventh-grader Jenny Melchor stating, “I would choose this way. It’s much easier to me.” Used in conjunction with the blended learning techniques found throughout the school, students in this district are getting an education that’s fully immersed in the latest technologies.

      Students at this elementary school are taking part in a pilot flipped classroom program for math this fall. Six fifth-grade classrooms will be using at-home video lessons and quizzes at home, bringing their homework into class so that they can get help completing it from the teacher. Teachers at the school are using Moodle to track student progress in the at-home portions, seeing who watched the videos and completed the quizzes and more easily pinpointing those who are struggling. Teachers and administrators at the school decided to give the flipped classroom a try because they believe it will help give above- and below-average students a learning experience that’s more personalized to their needs.

    • Sometimes flipping classrooms is referred to as the “Fisch Flip”, and algebra teacher Karl Fisch is where that name originates. Fisch teaches his freshman class using the flip method and believes it offers students a variety of benefits. He says it’s more advantageous to allow students to watch lecture material when its most convenient to them (whether at lunch, right after school, or during a study hall), and to let them learn at their own pace. Some students may only need to watch the short videos once, whereas others will have the advantage of being able to replay them until they can understand the material. It seems to be working for him, and the 20-year veteran plans to continue using the flip for future courses.

At all levels, students are encouraged to bring technology into the classroom, including e-books, tablets, and smartphones.       Public schools aren’t the only ones embracing flipped education. Private school teachers like Troy Cockrum are also giving flipping a try to see what it can do for their students. Cockrum teaches English at St. Thomas Aquinas, and while many already see the subject as a bit of a flipped course even when taught traditionally, he is changing things up using modern technology. Inspired by other teachers using flipping, Cockrum records short lectures that instruct students how to write or employ correct grammar. Students then come to class to do their writing using Google Docs, getting help from him with editing, formatting, and other issues. Only two months into his experiment with flipping and Cockrum already felt he was seeing better results from students. He does admit that his first year has been a bit challenging, as it requires a new set of classroom management skills and more time from him to track and help students, but he says the most important aspect of it has been “the class time and the one-on-one instruction I can do with each kid.”

        You are not alone (cue Michael Jackson…).  It may feel like it in the classroom sometimes, but you’re not.  You have a PLC or other team members who experience many of the same challenges–like how to consume all of the information you’re expected to consume.  So why not split up the responsibilities? Truth be told, the expectation that you stay current with the various content areas and your curriculum staff is not new.  What’s changed is their ability to reach out to you via a content stream in Writing Service.  This is a challenge, particularly for elementary teachers who may be part of many different content communities.  Why not assign different members of your grade-level or PLC team to stay on top of each of the content areas and report out highlights during your PLC meetings?  In essence, you’re using “human filtering.”

          Alas, despite our best efforts, the sheer amount of information being fire hosed at us will sometimes slip through our fingers.  Some days you will be out sick and your routines will fall by the wayside.  Other days, you might just have a case of the Mondays.  It’s my opinion that this is OK.  It used to fill me with anxiety if I missed a day or two checking my Twitter feed, and it grew to a point where I couldn’t scroll through every article.  Now, I just skip to the top when I must and figure that if the information is that important, I’ll hear about it one way or another.  While I do not recommend that this become a “standard practice,” I think we need to cut ourselves some slack and realize that humans are not computers.  We are not programmed to receive and interpret constant streams of web-based information 24/7.

          One of the most important things to keep in mind is brevity. While no one is going to be counting individual words, the guideline of short word count is a clear indicator to work on clarity of thought with all of your answers. Cornell interviews every applicant to its program, so if you are concerned that your answers are too concise in essay format, rest assured you will have the opportunity to discuss them further in the interview.

          The Cornell Executive MBA Program has three required essay questions and one optional question in its application.

          2. A key benefit of being in an Executive MBA Program is having the ability to learn from your classmates, or peers. How will you contribute to this learning environment?           Both of Cornell’s Executive MBA Programs operate on a rolling admissions basis. Therefore they do not adhere to strict application deadlines. With that said, they do encourage applicants to move forward at their earliest convenience to avoid potential seat capacity or timing restrictions.

          This question is purposely open to interpretation. If you would just like to list what organizations you are affiliated with that is fine, however if you would like to go into some detail about particular activities that are important to you, that is good, too. There is no word limit, however the more succinct, the better.

          The admissions committee is looking for students who will enrich the class with their contributions as much as the curriculum taught. Focus on unique experiences you have had either in your professional or personal life, and if possible, link those experiences to how they will contribute to particular courses or topics.

          The first part of this question asks “Why EMBA?” By making the choice to go after an EMBA, you are of course signaling you will keep your job while going to school. Therefore, be sure to link your past/current career experience with your short and long term goals in the context of how (and why) this type of format works best for you. When answering the “Why Cornell?” portion of the question, be convincing about the reasons Cornell is the best choice for you, and show you have done your homework – “location” and “reputation” won’t cut it. The admissions committee wants to know what you anticipate the program will be like, what you will get out of it, how the program fits with your career vision, and what the entire experience means to you as a person.

Elige un lugar para estar disponible, como la biblioteca o tu salon de clases, y luego establece un periodo de tiempo cada semana para estar allí. Trata de coordinar tus horas de oficina alrededor de las fechas de entrega de proyectos y tareas. Si no puedes encontrar un lugar específico para tus horas de oficina, considera reservar un tiempo en casa donde puedes responder a video llamadas o mensajes instantáneos de los estudiantes o padres interesados.

Pero si este sacrificio te obstaculiza en cualquier instante, te cansa más durante tu clase o retrasa tu tiempo de calificación, entonces podrás terminar perjudicando a tu clase entera por pasar unos minutos extras con ciertos estudiantes. Peor aún, si tus compañeros de trabajo te ven como alguien fiable y útil, entonces terminarás gastando más tiempo en sus projectos que en el tuyo. There has been discussion that this trend could be a result of the No Child Left Behind Act and the test-based teaching in our nation’s schools. The increase in scores in 2014 can likely be attributed to the changes that the ACT instituted in their tests, as announced in 2013, due to the changes in the national curricula that likely caused the decade long decline in test scores. Over all, however, the ACT has remained moderately stable, especially in comparison the the SAT.

          For a long while it was predominantly Midwestern students taking the ACT, mostly due to schools in the Midwest requiring it for graduation, but lately, it has spread to the rest of the US as people have discovered how different the ACT is from the SAT. Even with more students taking the ACT, the numbers show that students generally do better on the ACT than the SAT – where there has been a steady and stronger decline in scores.

          Overall, the white and Asian subgroups have the highest score averages with Asian scores consistently increasing, followed by the mixed race subgroup. African American and Native American subgroups had the lowest scores, perhaps because they are usually the most disenfranchised groups. Regardless, this is something that can be overcome by the student with diligence and dedication.
